The Office of Research is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Emeritus Hung Fan as the new Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Professor Craig Walsh as the new Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Engagement, both effective January 1, 2017.
Since joining the faculty at UCI in 1981, Professor Hung Fan has served in a wide variety of positions, including Director of the Cancer Research Institute for 30 years and Associate Director and Co-Director of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is widely recognized not only for his scientific achievements and service, but as a visionary leader, a dedicated mentor, and a true collaborator and consensus builder among his colleagues. In his new role, Dr. Fan will work closely with campus stakeholders to advance key campus initiatives that will shape UC Irvine’s research and creative enterprise. Dr. Fan earned his B.S. with highest distinction in Physics from Purdue University and his Ph.D. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
As an active researcher, Professor Craig Walsh has had considerable experience with a wide variety of regulatory bodies, including service as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and founding member of the Animal Research Advisory Committee (ARAC). Dr. Walsh has also held a variety of leadership positions at UCI, which include Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Center and Interim Co-Director and Associate Director for the Institute for Immunology. As the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Engagement, Dr. Walsh will partner with the campus research community, including faculty, staff, and administrators, to facilitate effective, efficient, compliant research administration processes. This will form the solid foundation from which pioneering research and creative endeavors may be launched. Dr. Walsh earned his B.S. in Microbiology and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from UCLA and competed his postdoc at UCSD in 2001 before joining the faculty here at UCI.
