CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 2017 Searle Scholars Program competition

UCI has the opportunity to nominate two candidates for the Searle Scholars Program, which recognizes outstanding new faculty with the potential to make innovative and high-impact contributions to research in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine and the biological sciences.

To be eligible, the candidate’s first appointment to an assistant professor, tenure-track position must have begun on or after July 1, 2015.  Normally, fifteen grants of $100,000 per year for three years will be made.  Funding allows maximum discretion for the recipient including the allocation of monies for academic and summer salary and equipment purchases.

Sunil Gandhi, Neurobiology & Behavior, received a 2013 Searle Scholar award.  150 institutions are eligible to participate in this limited call.

UCI may nominate only two candidates; therefore, interested applicants are asked to submit a preliminary application to the Office of Research by July 11, 2016 (via the UCI Review system) with the following information:

  • Research Abstract (2 pages) which describes the proposed research and its significance
  • List of 2-3 publications, each followed by a brief description of why the research is important and how it impacted their field (One page.  Please note: A similar requirement of up to 5 applications is requested in the final application packet to Searle).
  • Candidate’s bio sketch or abbreviated CV (no more than two pages)
  • Statement of Support from the Department Chair (one page)

If necessary, an ad hoc committee will convene to review the preliminary proposals.  The selected PI(s) will be notified well before Searle’s September 30, 2016 deadline for full proposals.

Please note that the selected candidate(s) must be able to provide to Searle three outside letters of reference, including one each from doctoral and post-doctoral mentors.  In addition, Searle requires a statement of commitment from the candidate’s department Chair, similar to what we are requiring for the internal application.
