Subject: New CIRM Salary Cap effective 7/1/22

Dear CIRM Awardee,

Per the CIRM Grants Administration Policy, the salary cap, which specifies the maximum amount of an individual’s salary that can be charged to a CIRM award, is to be adjusted every other fiscal year to account for the cumulative percent change in the California Consumer Price Index.

This is to inform you that the CIRM salary cap will increase from $284,000 to $301,000/year/100% FTE effective July 1st, 2022. This means you have the option to charge your active CIRM award a higher amount for salary incurred on or after July 1st. For instance, if an individual who makes $325,000 per year in salary is committing 25% effort on a CIRM award, then the CIRM award can be charged up to ($301,000 * 25%) / 12 months = $6,270.83 per month for that individual starting in the month of July 2022. No additional CIRM funds will be provided to cover this; incremental salary charges must be covered by existing CIRM funds.

Guidance for CIRM Trainees on CIRM research awards has also been updated depending on their educational level. Stipend levels for Bridges, Spark and Compass Trainees are set in their respective RFAs and are not affected by this change.

A history of CIRM’s salary caps can be found here. Please feel free to share this message with other relevant representatives at your institution.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Lewis
