Dear Colleagues:
On August 6, 2012, the University of California will launch an online
Compliance and Conflict of Interest Briefing for researchers at all UC
locations.
The Briefing, which is mandatory, takes about 40-60 minutes to complete.
It is designed to raise awareness of the University of California
Statement of Ethical Values and Standards of Ethical Conduct, and to
convey important information about conflict of interest (COI)
regulations when accepting extramural research funds. In addition, this
briefing satisfies the COI training requirement imposed by the revised
regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The training requirement applies to all investigators (i.e., principal
investigators and all other persons, regardless of title, who are
responsible for the design, conduct or reporting of research) submitting
proposals to or receiving awards issued by PHS agencies (i.e., NIH, CDC,
HRSA, SAMHSA, AHRQ, FDA and those sponsors adopting the PHS regulations)
on or after August 24, 2012. The regulation requires investigators to
complete training prior to engaging in PHS-funded research.
The Briefing was developed by a team of UC faculty and research policy
staff members. The effort was headed by the Office of Ethics,
Compliance and Audit Services at the UC Office of the President. The
Briefing can be taken on any computer with Internet access and does not
need to be completed in one sitting. As a UC Irvine researcher, you
will receive an email from the UC Learning Center with a link that will
direct you to the Briefing.
You are required to complete the Briefing by September 30, 2012. The
Briefing will remain available to you for reference throughout the year.
