CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 2016 Beckman Scholars Program

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation has invited UC Irvine to submit an application to the Beckman Scholars Program, which supports research by exceptionally talented undergraduate students working in chemistry, biochemistry, the biological and medical sciences, or some combination of these subjects. Please note that this is an institutional award for program support not an award given directly to any one undergraduate student.  If UCI receives an award, a student may then apply to the Beckman funded UCI program.

Each institution may submit one application for consideration for an award.  The application must include endorsements from the chief academic officer and the dean(s) of the College(s), School(s), or Division(s), including the participating academic unit.

Each award will fund up to six Beckman Scholars (including student scholarships, travel funds and research supplies) extending over two summers and one academic year. Awards must be awarded over a three-year period with at least ONE award per year awarded and a maximum of three awards in any one of these three years.  The research activities performed by Beckman Scholars shall be conducted under the guidance of a full-time, approved faculty member at the college or university receiving an award. The research work performed by the Scholar shall be deemed to be publishable by the student’s faculty mentor. Such activities must be performed part-time (ten hours per week) during one academic year and full-time over two summers (ten 40-hour weeks each summer) immediately before and after the academic year research experience.

Interest applicants should submit a pre-proposal my office (via electronic submission to or@research.uci.edu), by March 16, 2015.  The pre-proposal should contain, in no more than three (3) pages:

  • A synopsis of the proposed program supporting the Beckman Scholars, describing its aims and objectives
  • A list of between ten and fifteen faculty who will serve as mentors for the Beckman Scholars
  • An overview of the student evaluation and selection criteria that will be used to affirm that the institution’s most talented students are considered for Beckman Scholar awards
  • An overview of plans for nurturing Beckman Scholars as they progressively develop their research knowledge, skills and abilities, emphasizing the student as a focal point of research activities vs. supporting role duties (i.e., collaborator vs. support technician)

The following should also be included:

  • Curriculum vitae for the PI (and any additional potential faculty mentors, as desired)
  • Support letter from the Dean (or the equivalent in units without a Dean).

The selected candidate will be notified in time to prepare and submit a complete online application by the June 15, 2015 due date.
