UC Irvine receiving suspension notices for MCAs where UCLA serves as the prime recipient

VCR Aileen Anderson PhD

Dear UC Irvine Research Community:

We are writing to inform you of a disappointing development, as many are already aware, affecting research funding that will have an impact on UC Irvine’s research enterprise.

Last week, UCLA received notice that the federal government has suspended certain research funding through NSF, NIH, and other federal agencies. As a result, UC Irvine is beginning to receive suspension notices for Multiple Campus Awards (MCAs) where UCLA serves as the prime recipient and the funding originates from these affected federal agencies.

We are actively collaborating with UC Irvine leadership and UCOP to understand how the UC system will navigate this situation. We are committed to keeping you informed as additional information becomes available.
UC Irvine Sponsored Projects will be reaching out directly to Principal Investigators with projects that are directly impacted by these suspensions.

For UCLA MCAs that are or will be suspended, UCLA has provided the following guidance:

“If your grant was suspended, below are several key things you need to know:

  • The suspension requires that you immediately stop spending the grant funds.
  • The suspension terms require us to submit an interim financial report for each grant within 30 days of the notice showing all project expenses to date.
  • The suspension effectively freezes the grant at this point in time — it does not terminate the award. You are not required to report progress at this time.”
If you have any questions about suspended MCAs, please reach out to:

For additional context and information, please refer to the message from UCLA’s Chancellor, Dr. Julio Frenk: https://chancellor.ucla.edu/messages/the-loss-of-federal-funding-is-a-loss-for-america.

We appreciate your attention to this matter and will provide updates as the situation develops.

Sincerely,

Aileen Anderson, Ph.D.
