Inquiry from a Foreign Entity or Affiliated Individual
The academic community’s significant scientific advancements are possible due to international collaborations. However, some foreign governments and entities may take advantage of the open and collaborative nature of US academia to illegally acquire technical knowledge, information, and access to intellectual property.
If you receive inquiries to collaborate, visit, share data, etc., please take caution in what information you share and identify if there are any potential concerns, especially in cases where the inquiry is coming from a foreign individual or entity you are not familiar with. Examples of inquiries include but are not limited to:
- Requests for an individual or delegation to visit UCI labs
- Requests data or technical information, especially if not published
- Unsolicited grants or gifting of funds/equipment to conduct joint research projects from foreign academic institutions or foreign governments
For inquiries from foreign sources, please contact Research Security and International Engagement (RSIE) at or-rsie@uci.edu for additional guidance.
If you have questions or concerns, please direct them to or-rsie@uci.edu.
