Dear Colleagues:
I am writing to follow up on the two recently announced Google.org Requests for Proposals (RFPs) that contain terms that the University of California (UC) cannot feasibly accept:
- Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation, deadline of Friday, April 3
- Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science, deadline of Friday, April 17
Both opportunities require applicants, at the time of submission, to agree to “application terms” that Google has indicated are nonnegotiable. These terms include provisions related to indemnification, warranties, and waiver of legal rights, among others, that present significant legal and institutional concerns for the University. As a result, UC locations cannot submit applications to these RFPs.
The UC system is coordinating with colleagues at other universities across the U.S. to engage with Google, explain why we cannot accept their terms, and invite further collaboration in research funding opportunities. While we are committed to working with Google on future RFPs that would allow UC to participate in their research programs, at this time, we are not eligible for these two upcoming RFPs listed above.
Please contact me at warnerj@uci.edu for any questions or additional details about the application terms.
Sincerely,
Jeff Warner
