9/17/25:  Government shutdown odds go up after party leaders exchange fire (The Hill) The odds of a government shutdown are rising after Democratic leaders on Tuesday swiftly rejected a 91-page stopgap funding proposal unveiled by Speaker  Mike Johnson  (R-La.) and fellow House Republicans because it was put together with little Democratic input and doesn’t extend generous health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5506782-government-shutdown-odds-rising/

9/16/25:  University of California Unions Sue Over Trump Funding Threats (Bloomberg Law) Threats against UC are part of a broader attack on higher education by the Trump administration that has centered on Harvard University and other elite schools. The administration has used allegations of antisemitism at universities to justify the campaign. A court ruled Sept. 3 that the administration  illegally froze  $2 million in research funding. The Tuesday complaint follows a narrower  lawsuit  brought in the same venue in June by six UC researchers over terminated research grant funding. https://news.bloomberglaw.com/pharma-and-life-sciences/university-of-california-unions-sue-over-trump-funding-threats?context=search&index=10

9/15/25:  Scientists decry NIH pledge to end some human fetal tissue research (Science) The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says it will not renew a handful of research grants that an advocacy group identified as involving human fetal tissue—a decision that is setting off alarm bells for some in the scientific community. But it’s not clear whether all of the 17 studies actually involved the controversial material—or whether the move signals the revival of  restrictive policies on fetal tissue studies  that President Donald Trump imposed during his first term in office to satisfy abortion opponents. https://www.science.org/content/article/scientists-decry-nih-pledge-end-some-human-fetal-tissue-research
