Conducting Cannabis Research at UCI

Dear Colleagues,

Due to marijuana legalization in California and several other states, members of our research community have expressed an interest in and need for cannabis-related research, including an interest in accepting funding from the cannabis industry. While research involving the use of cannabis and/or funding from the cannabis industry is certainly important, UCI is obligated to comply with various federal laws and regulations, including the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).

Because the regulatory and compliance environment in this area is continuing to change and evolve, I have assigned the Research Engagement and Facilitation (REF) unit in the UCI Office of Research as the administrative home for program development related to this issue and to answer questions about cannabis research. Additionally, I have charged REF with developing a committee for reviewing cannabis related research and/or funding from the cannabis industry to evaluate institutional risk.

For more information, please contact Amy Green, Research Compliance & Policy Administrator at acgreen1@uci.edu. You may also visit our website on cannabis research at https://www.research.uci.edu/ref/cannabis-research/index.html.

Sincerely,

Pramod Khargonekar, Ph.D.
