Reminder about Use of Drugs/Agents in Animals:
Drug Expiration Dates

For labs administering drugs or agents to live animals for research, training, and teaching activities – This is a reminder to check drug expiration dates prior to use in animals.

Your lab is advised to implement a robust inventory system to track expiration dates of medicines and other drugs and materials used in live animals. Good practices include:
- assign a responsible person (and backup) to conduct monthly inventory checks
- designate a centralized storage location for medicines and materials in your lab to make monitoring easier
- separate expired items into a clearly labelled area until appropriate disposal to prevent inadvertent use in live animals

Policies & Regulations
Federal regulations and institutional IACUC policy prohibit the use of expired analgesics, anesthetics, and emergency drugs in animals at any time.
Other expired medical items (e.g., expired suture material) may only be used in acute, terminal procedures.

CAUTION: Use of expired drugs in live animals will be treated as serious noncompliance in conformance with the campus Policy for Regulatory Noncompliance. Any fines imposed upon the institution by federal agencies may be transferred to the Principal Investigator/Lead Researcher. Additionally, the PI/LR may be subject to sanctions including protocol suspension by the IACUC.
