UCI Research Phases During the Pandemic

Public health and higher education guidance along with local circumstances and a broad consultative process that encompasses UCI stakeholders, as well as other UC campuses is the basis for making decisions regarding when UCI will move from one phase to the next in its phased research framework.  Given the pandemic’s long-term nature, change will occur gradually, in a carefully measured fashion, and over an extended period of time.  The Vice Chancellor for Research will issue an announcement to inform the research community when UCI will move from one phase to the next.  Each phase includes ongoing monitoring to determine whether UCI can progress to the next phase or must revert to an earlier phase.

UCI researchers should keep in mind that wearing a face covering, physical distancing, frequent hand washing, regularly disinfecting surfaces, and reduced population density in research spaces are core safety precautions for Phase 1, 2 and 3 research activities.  Thus, only personnel who must necessarily access UCI Research Facilities should do so, for the least amount of time possible, and following the approved research team’s approved plan, UCI/UC executive directives, the guidance contained in this website, and other campus guidance as applicable.
