COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTIONAL TRAINING INITIATIVE (CITI)

RESEARCH AND HIPAA PRIVACY PROTECTIONS COURSE

The UCI Human Research Protections (HRP) Office has adopted the CITI Research and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Protections course, which includes the 2013 Omnibus Final Rule [Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (HITECH)].  The CITI Program routinely updates their courses, to ensure researchers remain current on revisions to relevant federal research regulations and policies. 

The prior UCI HIPAA Research Tutorial will no longer be available as of May 31, 2018. 

The new Research and HIPAA Privacy Protectionscourse includes the following topics:

¨Waivers of Alterations of Authorization Requirement Due to Minimal Risk

¨Limited Data Sets and Data Use Agreements

¨Minimum Necessary Uses and Disclosures

¨Disclosure Accounting

¨Characteristics of Authorizations

¨Revocations of Authorizations

¨Recruiting Into Research

¨Retrospective Research

¨Security Rule

Beginning May 31, 2018, for human subjects researchers that access, use, create, or disclose health data:

¨The basic and refresher Biomedical Investigators CITI course will include the Research and HIPAA Privacy Protections course.

¨The Research and HIPAA Privacy Protections course will be an optional module in the basic and refresher Social/Behavioral Investigators CITI course.

¨The Research and HIPAA Privacy Protections course may also be taken independent from the basic course modules.
