Openness: Communicating About Research with Animals

February 18, 2026
12:00-1:00 PM (virtual)

The IACUC is sharing a topic of interest with the UCI research community to highlight ongoing discussions regarding research animals.

The National Academies for Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) is offering a free webinar:

“Continuing the Conversation: Openness and Global Perspectives in Communicating About Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals”

Join the BAHSCR Roundtable on Science and Welfare of Animals Involved in Research for a 60-minute webinar that continues the conversation sparked by the National Academies’ December 2023 workshop, “Effective Communication with the General Public About Scientific Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals”.

This session focuses on what “openness” looks like in practice. We will explore how organizations from the U.S. and abroad are building trust through proactive, two-way dialogue that is plain-spoken, values-aware, and grounded in ethical considerations.

The National Academies are convening a webinar hosted by the Board on Animal Health Sciences, Conservation, and Research (BAHSCR) Roundtable on Science and Welfare of Animals Involved in Research that builds on discussions from the 2023 workshop, Effective Communication with the General Public About Scientific Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals. The webinar will consider how institutions are applying principles of openness within different regulatory and cultural environments.

Speakers from the United States and abroad will share brief case studies, followed by a moderated discussion on efforts to increase transparency, factors that enabled change, and lessons that may be adaptable in other settings. The webinar will also highlight international frameworks, including European and Canadian transparency agreements, alongside U.S.-based openness initiatives.
