Just not for the reasons President Donald Trump has suggested….Today, American universities likewise face a threat to their independence unmatched in modern U.S. history. By  conditioning federal research grants  on ideological conformity — and threatening investigations, funding freezes and intrusive oversight — the Trump administration has turned money meant to cure disease and advance knowledge into political ransom. 2/3/26:  NIH scraps policy that classified basic research in people as clinical trials (The Transmitter) The U.S. National Institutes of Health will no longer require basic research in people to follow clinical trial reporting requirements, according to an  announcement  from the agency last Thursday.
