Important Reminder Regarding the NIH Public Access Policy

New Video Explains Submission Process

Dear Colleagues,

The NIH Public Access Policy requires that NIH-supported research published in journals be made available to the public in the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central no later than 12 months after the publication date.  In an effort to better facilitate compliance with this policy, the Office of Research created the following video explaining the policy requirements, giving step-by-step instructions on how to make manuscripts available in PubMed Central, and explaining how to report this to NIH.

Please note that the Public Access Policy applies to all NIH-supported researchers, even those who receive funding indirectly, such as through NIH-funded centers and institutes, such as the Chao Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science.  So, please take a moment to watch this video:

An implicit benefit in complying with the Public Access Policy is that the free and open availability of research publications will expose them to a broader audience both nationally and internationally.  This broader exposure may result in increased citations for authors and increased visibility and funding for UCI’s research enterprise, which supports our campus’ strategic goals.

Sincerely,

Pramod Khargonekar, Ph.D.
Vice Chancellor for Research
Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science
